ମେରାମଣ୍ଡଳୀ, ୦୯/୦୪/୨୦୨୬: ଢେଙ୍କାନାଳ ଜିଲ୍ଲା ହିନ୍ଦୋଳ ବ୍ଲକ ଅନ୍ତର୍ଗତ ସଞ୍ଜପଡ଼ା ଗ୍ରାମର ମହିଳାମାନେ ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ଦକ୍ଷତାକୁ ଆତ୍ମନିର୍ଭରଶୀଳତାରେ ରୂପାନ୍ତରିତ କରି ଉଦାହରଣ ପାଲଟିଛନ୍ତି। ଏହି ଅଞ୍ଚଳରେ ପ୍ରଚୁର ପରିମାଣରେ ତାଳପତ୍ର ଉପଲବ୍ଧ ହେଉଥିଲେ ହେଁ, ଏହା ଏକ ପ୍ରକାର ଅବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହୋଇ ରହିଥିଲା। ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ସାଂସ୍କୃତିକ ଐତିହ୍ୟରେ ତାଳପତ୍ରର ଏକ ଗୁରୁତ୍ୱପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ସ୍ଥାନ ରହିଛି, ଯାହା ପୂର୍ବ କାଳରେ ପୋଥି ଲିଖନ, ଜାତକ ଏବଂ ରାମାୟଣ ଓ ମହାଭାରତ ଭଳି ମହାକାବ୍ୟର କଳାତ୍ମକ ଚିତ୍ରଣ ପାଇଁ ବ୍ୟବହୃତ ହେଉଥିଲା। ଏବେ ସେହି ତାଳପତ୍ରକୁ ମୂଲ୍ୟବାନ ସାମଗ୍ରୀରେ ପରିଣତ କରାଯାଇପାରିଛି।
ଟାଟା ଷ୍ଟିଲ୍ ଫାଉଣ୍ଡେସନ(ଟିଏସ୍ଏଫ୍)ର ‘ମହିଳା ସଶକ୍ତିକରଣ ଏବଂ ଉଦ୍ୟୋଗିତା’ (ଡବ୍ଲ୍ୟୁଇଇ) ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ ଅଧୀନରେ ଏହି ରୂପାନ୍ତରଣର ପ୍ରକ୍ରିୟା ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୋଇଥିଲା। ଟିଏସ୍ଏଫ୍ ପ୍ରୋତ୍ସାହନରେ ଗଠିତ ଗୃହଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀ ସମବାୟ ସମିତି ସହ ଜଡ଼ିତ ଅନ୍ତର୍ଗତ ସଞ୍ଜପଡ଼ା ପଞ୍ଚାୟତର ୨୫ ଜଣ ମହିଳା ସଦସ୍ୟାଙ୍କୁ ନେଇ ଚାରି ମାସିଆ ‘ତାଳପତ୍ର ମୂଲ୍ୟ ବୃଦ୍ଧି ତାଲିମ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକ୍ରମ’ ଆୟୋଜିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା।
ଏହି ପ୍ରଶିକ୍ଷଣ ମହିଳାମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ନୂତନ ସୁଯୋଗର ଦ୍ୱାର ଉନ୍ମୋଚନ କରିଛି। ମହିଳାମାନେ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ତାଳପତ୍ରରେ କୋଷ୍ଟର, ବୁକ୍ମାର୍କ ଏବଂ ଚଟେଇ ତିଆରି କରି ରାଜଗାରକ୍ଷମ ହେବା ସହ ଆତ୍ମନିର୍ଭରଶୀଳ ହୋଇଛନ୍ତି। ପ୍ରଶିକ୍ଷଣ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକ୍ରମ ଚାଲିଥିବା ସମୟରେ ପ୍ରତ୍ୟେକ ସହଭାଗୀ ୩,୦୦୦ ଟଙ୍କା ଲେଖାଏଁ ରୋଜଗାର କରିପାରଛନ୍ତି।
ମହିଳାମାନେ ୨୦୨୫ ଡିସେମ୍ବରରେ ଓଡ଼ିଶା ସରକାରଙ୍କ ‘ମିଶନ ଶକ୍ତି’ ସହ ମିଳିତ ଭାବେ ‘ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ପ୍ରଡ୍ୟୁସର ଗ୍ରୁପ୍’ ଗଠନ କରିଛନ୍ତି। ଗତ ଡିସେମ୍ବର ୨୦ ରୁ ୨୪ ତାରିଖ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଅନୁଷ୍ଠିତ ‘ଢେଙ୍କାନାଳ ମହୋତ୍ସବ’ରେ ଷ୍ଟଲ୍ ପକାଇ ସେମାନେ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରୁଥିବା ସାମଗ୍ରୀର ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନ କରିଥିଲେ। ଏଥିପାଇଁ ‘ଇନୋଭେଟିଭ୍ ବିଜନେସ୍ ଆଇଡିଆ’ ବର୍ଗରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ୧୦,୦୦୦ ଟଙ୍କାର ପୁରସ୍କାର ରାଶି ପ୍ରଦାନ କରାଯାଇ ସମ୍ମାନିତ କରାଯାଇଛି।
ଏହି ସଫଳତା କେବଳ ଆର୍ଥିକ ରୋଜଗାରରେ ସୀମିତ ନୁହେଁ, ବରଂ ଏହା ସେମାନଙ୍କ ମାନସିକତାରେ ଏକ ବଡ଼ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଆଣିଛି। ଏହି ପ୍ରୟାସ ଯୋଗୁ ସାଧାରଣ ଗୃହିଣୀରୁ ଶିଳ୍ପୀ ଏବଂ ଉଦ୍ୟୋଗୀ ଭାବେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ନୂତନ ପରିଚୟ ମିଳିପାରିଛିି।
ଏ ସମ୍ପର୍କରେ ଗୃହଲକ୍ଷ୍ମୀ ସମବାୟ ସମିତିର ସଦସ୍ୟା ମମତା ଗଡ଼ନାୟକ କୁହନ୍ତି, “ଏହି ଅଭିନବ ପ୍ରୟାସ ଆମକୁ ଆମ ପାରିପାର୍ଶ୍ୱିକ ସମ୍ବଳର ମୂଲ୍ୟ ବୁଝିବାରେ ସାହାଯ୍ୟ କରିଛି। ଏବେ ଆମେ ଆହୁରି ଆଗକୁ ବଢ଼ିବା ସହ ନିଜ ପରିଶ୍ରମ ବଳରେ ପରିବାରର ଉଜ୍ଜ୍ୱଳ ଭବିଷ୍ୟତ ଗଢ଼ିବାକୁ ଆଶା ରଖିଛୁ।”
ଅନ୍ୟତମ ସଦସ୍ୟା ସ୍ମିତା ବିଶ୍ୱାଳ କହିଛନ୍ତି ଯେ, “ଏହି ଯାତ୍ରା ଆମ ଜୀବନର ପରିଭାଷା ବଦଳାଇ ଦେଇଛି। ଆମେ କିଛି ନୂଆ ଶିଖିବା ସହ ରୋଜଗାରକ୍ଷମ ହୋଇପାରିଥିବାରୁ ଆନନ୍ଦିତ।”
ଟାଟା ଷ୍ଟିଲ୍ ଫାଉଣ୍ଡେସନ, ମେରାମଣ୍ଡଳୀର ୟୁନିଟ୍ ଲିଡ୍ କୁମାର ସୌରଭ ଏ ସମ୍ପର୍କରେ କହିଛନ୍ତି ଯେ, “ସ୍ଥାନୀୟ ସମ୍ବଳ ଏବଂ ପାରମ୍ପରିକ ଜ୍ଞାନକୌଶଳକୁ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରି ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀ-ଭିତ୍ତିକ ସ୍ଥାୟୀ ଜୀବିକା ନିର୍ବାହ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଆମେ ପ୍ରତିଶ୍ରୁତିବଦ୍ଧ। ଆବଶ୍ୟକ ସହାୟତା ଏବଂ ମିଳିତ ଉଦ୍ୟମ ଦ୍ୱାରା ଦକ୍ଷତାକୁ ଆର୍ଥିକ ସୁଯୋଗରେ ରୂପାନ୍ତରିତ କରାଯାଇପାରିବ ବୋଲି ସଞ୍ଜପଡ଼ାର ମହିଳାମାନେ ପ୍ରମାଣ କରିଛନ୍ତି। ସେମାନଙ୍କର ଉଦ୍ୟୋଗୀ ମନୋଭାବକୁ ଉତ୍ସାହିତ କରିବା ପାଇଁ ଟାଟା ଷ୍ଟିଲ ଫାଉଣ୍ଡେସନ ଆଗାମୀ ଦିନରେ ମଧ୍ୟ ସମସ୍ତ ପ୍ରକାର ସହଯୋଗ ଜାରି ରଖିବ।”

Livelihoods from Palm Leaves
Meramandali, 9 April, 2026- In the serene village of Sanjapada in Hindol block of Dhenkanal district, where palm trees
have flourished for generations, a quiet transformation is underway led by women who are turning tradition into
opportunity and skills into self-reliance.
For years, the abundant palm leaves in the region remained an underutilized resource, despite their deep cultural roots
in Odisha’s heritage, once used for sacred manuscripts, horoscopes, and artistic depictions of epics like the Ramayana
and Mahabharata. Today, these same leaves are being reimagined as products of value and pride.
This transformation began when Tata Steel Foundation, under its Women Empowerment and Entrepreneurship (WEE) project, introduced a four-month palm leaf value addition training programme for 25 women shareholders of the
Gruhalaxami Cooperative Society in Sanjapada Panchayat.
The training opened new doors. Women who had never engaged in income-generating activities began crafting coasters,
bookmarks, and stitched palm leaf mats, learning not just a skill, but a pathway to independence. During the programme,
each participant earned ₹3,000, marking their first step towards financial empowerment.
The journey didn’t stop at skill-building. With support and guidance, the women came together to form the Jagannath
Producer Group in December 2025 in convergence with Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha, giving their efforts a
collective identity and stronger market access.
Their growing confidence found a public stage at the Dhenkanal Mahotsav (December 20–24, 2025), where they showcased their craft through a live demonstration stall. Their work drew admiration from visitors and officials alike, earning them recognition under the “Innovative Business Idea” category along with a cash prize of ₹10,000. What makes this story remarkable is not just the income earned, but the shift in mindset. From homemakers to artisans and emerging entrepreneurs, these women are redefining their roles within their families and communities.
Mamta Gadnayak, a member of the Gruhalaxmi Cooperative Society,said, “This initiative has helped us realise the value
of what we already had around us. We are now more confident, skilled, and hopeful about building a better future for our families through our own efforts.” Another member, Smita Biswal added, “Being part of this journey has changed my outlook completely. From learning a new craft to earning my own income, I now feel empowered and motivated to grow further and support other women
in our community.”
Today, the palm leaves of Sanjapada are no longer just part of the landscape—they are symbols of resilience, creativity, and new beginnings. With enhanced skills, growing confidence, and increasing market exposure, these women are poised to scale new heights, proving that when opportunity meets determination, even the simplest resources can transform lives.
Speaking about this journey, Kumar Saurabh, Unit Lead, Tata Steel Foundation, Meramandali, said: “This initiative reflects our commitment to enabling community-led and sustainable livelihoods by building on locally available resources and traditional knowledge. The women of Sanjapada have demonstrated how skill development, collective effort, and the right support can translate into meaningful economic opportunities. It is encouraging to see their growing confidence and entrepreneurial spirit, and we remain committed to supporting them as they expand their reach and strengthen their livelihoods.”
